Traditional Executive Resumes... Obsolete?

James, while it's true that more and more executives are securing their first meeting with hiring officials via their online footprints (i.e. Linkedin or Facebook profiles, web-based resumes) or by having been recruited as so-called "passive candidates," there remains a need for the traditional executive resume. At least for now. Many if not most top employers continue to require a resume at some point in the hiring process. And it's still expected that you will have one at the interview.

What's more, the old traditional, achievement-rich resume remains an ideal launching pad for some of the more contemporary job search techniques; it can provide the basis for your web-based resume, for example. So no, the traditional executive resume isn't obsolete.

Sidebar: Given the rapidly increasingly influence of the web and social media, the degree to which your executive resume writer is tapped into those influences can have a dramatic impact on the success of your job search. My advice? If you're exploring the services of outside talent, make sure the executive resume writer you choose is knowledgeable not only in crafting a must-read traditional resume, but skilled in the intricacies of social media. Look for a writer who offers online branding. For example, the development and placement of online identities and profiles at sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, Google Profile, etc.
